Thursdays 25 November & 2 December 2021
PLEASE NOTE: tickets are still available, but it is now too late for wines to be delivered in time for week one of this tasting. Collection from Great Grog’s warehouse in Edinburgh is still possible.
What a treat we have in store in our special Christmas tasting to round-off the year. Perfectly timed to whet your appetitie and provide inspiration for the festive season, our tasting features wines that Tom thinks would be ideal for the Christmas dinner table. There will be classics including Champagne, Cru Beaujolais and sweet Monbazillac, but we’re stretching the imagination with some intriguing and unusual beauties too.
How about a beautiful Pecorino from Italy, a crisp but more full-bodied wine that should be a star with seafood or smoked salmon for example, or if looking for a more large-scaled and robust red for your main course or hard cheeses, the excellent ‘Big Easy’ Bordeaux blend from Ernie Els in Stellenbosch. And while Port or Banyuls are classic matches for rich Christmas pudding, we’ll try something very different: a fortified Tannat from Uruguay, borrowing techniques from Marsala and infused with spices. The ultimate Christmas pudding wine?
We’ll consider all aspects of Christmas food and wine matching, for both traditional fare and for those planning an alternative Christmas meal. If Tom’s wine choices appeal, we’ve timed the tasting so you will have plenty of time to source these, or find similar wines.
Tom’s tastings are always relaxed and inclusive, but packed with information and insight. For Christmas we will cover essential styles for the celebration: sparkling, white, red and sweet. Tom will explain some of the wine-matching opportunities and challenges presented by this once a year occasion, looking at aspects of the traditional roast dinner like richness, texture and flavour. If you are planning a non-tradtional Christmas meal, be that more red meat-based or a vegetarian alternative, we’ll cover that too.
Christmas is a time of excess for many people, so although we are pushing the boat out a little with some of our wine choices, we’ve negotiated a discounted price from our supplier: the six wines will be delivered for £85 – an average of just over £14 per bottle. As always, Tom makes no commission on the wines, which are detailed below.
This tasting runs over two sessions, from 7pm – 8pm each evening. The ticket price of £25 covers both sessions and is per household, not per person.
We’ll open three wines each night, but they’ll drink just as well over the next couple of days so nothing will be wasted. You may also attend without purchasing the wines.
This tasting is split into two sessions on 25th November & 2nd December 2021, from 7pm - 8:15pm. Ticket price covers both sessions and is per household, not per person. You will be taken to the wine purchase page once you have bought your ticket.
Optional wine preservation kit available at checkout.
